VOID IF UNDERSTOOD: a telephone-like CRT terminal is shown from behind with its casing removed, exposing the glass tube, copper coils, transformer, boards, capacitors and wiring. A small torn seal on the discarded cover reads WARRANTY SEAL — BROKEN BY CURIOSITY.

What you’re wearing

The warranty remained valid while the machine was an expensive beige mystery. Then you removed six screws, recognised the transformer and became exactly the sort of dangerous customer the seal had been placed there to prevent.

Rabbit hole

Does curiosity void anything?

A warranty seal is a tiny piece of theatre. It turns opening a case into a ceremonial crossing of the line between customer and suspect. The machine may belong to you, but the sticker would like everyone present to remember that understanding it remains an unauthorised escalation of privilege.

The legal effect is not universal. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission warned companies in 2024 that warranty-void-if-removed stickers and similar statements may be deceptive and may obstruct routine maintenance and repair. That is a US enforcement position, not a magic sentence governing every warranty in Britain. It is still useful evidence that some seals are less a legal force field than a confidence trick printed on shiny foil.

Opening old electronics can also be genuinely dangerous. The Health and Safety Executive publishes specific guidance for servicing audio, television and computer equipment, and cathode-ray-tube hardware combines high-voltage circuitry with heavy glass and hazardous materials. The US Environmental Protection Agency notes the lead in CRT funnel glass and encourages repair and reuse where practical. Curiosity is not insulation; learn the hazards before introducing a screwdriver to equipment capable of remembering electricity after you have unplugged it.

That distinction matters. Safety information tells you where the danger is and how competent work is done. A hostile seal tells you that knowledge itself is the danger. The shirt gives the exposed CRT, coils, boards, transformer and wiring the heroic space, then hides the torn WARRANTY SEAL — BROKEN BY CURIOSITY on the discarded casing. The warranty was happiest when the machine was a black box. You had the vulgarity to discover components.
