Unauthorised Backup: a listener sits beside a battered cassette recorder near the bottom of the design while a long ribbon of magnetic tape twists upwards through otherwise empty space.

We develop the concepts and direct the artwork using AI image tools. We choose what goes on the shirt, so complaints about the pictures belong with us.

Unauthorised Backup

Style

Price and final sizes are not confirmed yet. You cannot order this shirt through the site at the moment.

What you’re wearing

The copy is local, legible and entirely indifferent to whether the platform still recognises your account. This is known in enterprise computing as resilience and in consumer computing as suspicious behaviour requiring another paragraph in the terms of service.

Rabbit hole

When did the copy become contraband?

Backups are not an eccentric hobby. NIST’s contingency-planning guidance treats data backup, off-site media and recovery procedures as ordinary parts of keeping an information system alive after something goes wrong. Institutions call this resilience because the alternative phrase, we kept the only copy in the thing that caught fire, tends to disturb auditors.

The emotional temperature changes when an individual makes the copy. Then we get words such as unauthorised, circumvention and access control, as though redundancy itself had pulled on a balaclava. The word unauthorised tells you that permission is missing. It does not tell you whether the copy is accurate, necessary, harmful or the only version that will remain usable after a platform decides your ancient purchase has reached the end of its strategic journey.

Magnetic tape is not immortal. The Library of Congress advises clean, maintained playback equipment, careful handling and stable storage because cassettes are physical objects with physical failure modes. This is one of their better qualities. You can inspect the damage. You can clean the machine. The tape does not vanish because a licensing server was acquired by a company whose new chief executive is excited about synergies.

On the shirt, the recorder and listener sit low while the tape escapes in a long ribbon towards the collar. That empty climb is the backup doing what a backup is for: leaving the immediate blast radius. No cloud icon, no green tick, no motivational dashboard. Just another copy, made before anybody remembered to forbid survival.
