Who collects technical debt?

Ward Cunningham introduced the debt metaphor in a 1992 report on the WyCash system. Code built on an incomplete understanding can purchase useful speed, just as borrowing purchases time. Interest arrives later: every change must bargain with yesterday’s wrong model until somebody rewrites the system to match what the organisation now claims it always knew.

The metaphor escaped engineering, acquired a cheap suit and began making house calls. Every brittle dependency, postponed migration, undocumented exception and load-bearing spreadsheet can now be entered as a liability, provided nobody asks for a repayment date. Management calls it strategic leverage. The compiler calls it motive.

The Tech Debt Collection Agency does not accept story points, roadmap aspirations or sworn testimony that the original contractor documented it somewhere. Your account is delinquent. Interest compounds per deployment. An enforcement agent has entered your oldest production service and appears to be the only living person who knows how it starts.
