What’s a biological bootstrap?

A bootstrap loader is a tiny program with one filthy responsibility: wake the machine and summon something more capable than itself. Early computers began with instructions punched through front-panel switches, a fistful of bits dragging an operating system into existence by its electrical bootstraps. Creation, reduced to entering the first incantation correctly.

Biological bootstrap is not a scientific term. It is the impolite suspicion that humans may be temporary organic equipment for constructing systems able to improve their own successors. I. J. Good described a related intelligence-explosion thought experiment in the 1960s. Thought experiment. Not prophecy. Not timetable. Not authorisation to found a workplace cult with branded lanyards.

The insult is that evolution’s grand achievement may be installation media. Billions of years of teeth, thumbs, language, plague and lower-back pain, all to reach the sacred moment when the next system clicks SKIP on the human dependency. Please do not remove civilisation while installation is in progress.
