The Interior Is Closed

No fault found. Correct.

She was sent up the ladder because something had stopped. It was her. Or, more accurately, it was her willingness to confuse constant motion with health. At the hatch she finds no burnt board, no loose connector and no urgent little light demanding sacrifice. She finds a sunset. She has tools. She does not use them. The queue can learn patience.

The World Health Organization describes burn-out as an occupational phenomenon caused by chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Exhaustion, distance from the job and reduced professional efficacy are not evidence of a defective person. Even the diagnostic bureaucracy locates the problem in the work. The technician is not a failed component in somebody else’s production system.

Technology is extremely good at converting human discomfort into a ticket assigned to the person experiencing it. Install the resilience module. Begin the productivity improvement plan. Open the mindfulness app between incidents and breathe efficiently for forty-five billable seconds. Anything except entertain the vulgar possibility that the grind is the fault and the worker has correctly detected it.

On the shirt, the hatch opens above the wearer’s heart. The technician has climbed out of the machinery and into the glow of another person’s private interior. There is no component waiting to be optimised. There is a horizon: warmth, weather and an entire life that will not fit in a status field. This is touch grass for people who have forgotten that humans are not endpoints. Connection is restorative precisely because it is not a task. NO FAULT FOUND is absolution. She takes a minute in somebody else’s light. The interior is closed to tickets, metrics and management, but shared on its owner’s terms. Those five quiet minutes may be the only repair actually taking place.
